filmed on the day for your own personal reference over time!

Richard Tiejun Chao is a world-renowned watercolorist living in Sydney, Australia. 

This workshop focuses on painting portrait with watercolour on paper for which Richard is renown.

It will be a step by step instruction to enable the participants to finish a portrait by the end of the day.

An explorative artist, Richard tries out the possibilities of watercolor as a medium with huge size paintings. His models are people from every corners of the world with diverse and unique customs and cultures, as well as religions, which amaze him; while the common feature among these people from all walks of life, their sufferings and happiness, impresses him.

This workshop focuses on painting portrait with watercolour on paper.

It will be a step by step instruction to enable the participants to finish a portrait by the end of the day.

The workshop is planned as follows:

Lecture: A brief introduction to material and the knowledge on color

Step One: Drawing

  1. A brief introduction to composition and sketch 
  2. A quick demonstration
  3. Participants practice 

Step Two: Basic Tone

  1. A brief introduction to background and skin tone
  2. A quick demonstration
  3. Participants practice

Step Three: Details

  1. A brief introduction to structure of a head (Skull and muscles)
  2. A quick demonstration
  3. Participants practice 

Step Four: Adjusting

  1. A brief introduction to finalizing by balancing tone and value
  2. A quick demonstration
  3. Participants practice 

Competency level: All levels.

Materials needed:

  • Half sheet 300g cotton watercolour paper, medium/rough preferred
  • Round brush (or Chinese brush) and flat brush one in each size of large, medium and small
  • A packet of watercolour (minimum 12 colours, which should include Ultra-marine, Black, Burnt-umber)
  • A jar/bucket to wash your brush in
  • Kitchen paper towel 
  • A pencil and eraser
  • A board to tape your paper to and lean on. 

About Richard Tiejun Chao

Richard Tiejun Chao is a world-renowned watercolorist living in Sydney, Australia.

Born in a family of artistic atmosphere, he has accomplished 11-year systematic professional study on oil painting and obtained Master’s Degree of Art. Taking a contemporary perspective, he depicts his interpretation on the human world in his realistic paintings.

An explorative artist as he is, Richard tries out the possibilities of watercolor as a medium with huge size paintings. In the last few years, he’s been winners or finalists in over 50 prizes and his art works have been exhibited and solo exhibitions have been held in 5 continents. Meanwhile, his artworks are featured in the international leading journals. His paintings are collected by museums, galleries and private collectors. Richard travels around the world to international art exhibitions and art festivals. He is also invited to jury contests, give demonstrations, workshops and lectures in Europe, Asia, and Australia.
