Marooned In The Mist by Sahan Kulathunge

ARTIST NOTES: After a fierce storm lashed the coastline near Cairns, a strange boat appeared on the beach, abandoned, weather-beaten, and utterly silent. No one claimed it. No one knew where it had come from. It simply stood there, like a memory washed ashore.
This painting was born from that moment—an attempt to capture not just the image of the vessel, but the quiet emotion it stirred. I imagined the boat still at sea, caught in the thick of the storm, struggling alone against waves that neither welcomed nor forgave. In that misty space between hope and surrender, it drifted without anchor or name—just waiting.
Marooned in the Mist speaks to more than just a ship. It reflects the moments in life when we too feel unclaimed, lost in the tides, waiting for clarity to break through the storm. As an artist and migrant, I see pieces of my own journey in that vessel—caught between places, quietly searching for belonging.
