Acceptable Art Works

Acceptable Artwork and Categories of Entry:

This year we want to tempt your creativity and encourage you, as Artists to try something different - however, we still have to set some standards to enable us to manage the judging of this diversity and emerging presentations of your Work.

There will be four (4) Categories for Entry to the Australian Watercolour Muster - 2020:

  1. Experimental Watercolour I – Artwork to be Watercolour based mediums on primed Board - up to 16" x 20" (inch/imperial) = 40.64 x 50.8cm (metric) we are recommending Ampersand Aquabord for this Category
  2. Experimental Watercolour II - Artwork to be Watercolour mediums on Canvas primed with appropriate grounds to accept watercolour mediums - no larger than 1 x metre in any direction.

  3. Watercolour Paper - on either full or 1/2 sheet watercolour paper – 300gsm or higher any brand, we are being flexible this year with sizing given the changes this year..

  4. Entry for Under 30’s Australian Emerging Artist - Full or half sheet watercolour paper – 300gsm or higher any brand.

For those of you keen to be experimental here is a list of stockists that stock Ampersand Aquabord and Grounds

**Please Note | Categories 1 to 3 inclusive are open to Australian and this year we invite International Artists to join with us in these 3 Categories - Category 4: Is only open to Australian nationals under 30 years at the time of submission of their Work - this is a special Category to encourage our local Australian Art Scene, to encourage our emerging artists for the future!

** All Work is to be submitted in photographic format 300dpi max 2Mb - on the Gallery 247 on-line art and art show management system.

Please Note: This is a  'Watercolour Muster' and for this reason:

For the Experimental Categories I and II :

90% of the materials to be used are to be water based mediums from all brands:

  • Water based pigments
  • Water based inks
  • Water based markers
  • Water based pencils

10% of materials can be introduced mixed media - including fibre and introduced paper/s

For the Watercolour Paper Category - Artists are requested to enter Watercolour Work on either:

  • Full Sheets of Watercolour Paper - 300gsm or higher - any brand usually 56 x 76 cm (metric), or
  • 1/2 Sheets*** of Watercolour Paper - 300gsm or higher - any brand usually 56 x 38 cm (metric)

*** Please note - because of the disruption of the current Covid19 Pandemic the current 32 Australian Artists nominated to have their Work showcased in FabrianoInAcquarello - Italy 2020 will be showcased Digitally in 2020 and we anticipate, world health allowing, there will be a physical Exhibition of their Work (which is already in Italy) during April/May 2021. For this reason we anticipate that we will not - be nominating an additional group of Australian Artist's Work from this 2020 Australian Watercolour Muster to go to Italy, however we do want to be prepared if this decision is changed. 1/2 Sheet *** paper is required for an Artist to be eligible to be nominated for entry into FabrianoInAcquarello - Italy in any year - so if you are keen to be 'eligible' should there be an Open Call for 2021 for Italy - please use the 1/2 sheet size of paper for your Submission.

  • The composition of the medium for this Category is 90% Watercolour medium of any brand, and
  • 10% watercolour based mediums such as ink or other water soluble medium - this is to be painterly which means we are discouraging the use of mixed media in this Category.

For the Under 30 - Emerging Artist Category - an Artist has to be under 30 at the time of Entry/Submission of their Work on the Gallery 247 on-line art and art show management system.

  • Work is required to be entered on full or 1/2 Sheets of Watercolour Paper

The composition of the medium for this Category is:

  • 90% Watercolour medium of any brand, and
  • 10% watercolour based mediums such as ink or other water soluble medium - this is to be painterly which means we are discouraging the use of mixed media in this Category.
